Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Architecture is energy. Lines drawn on paper to represent architectural intentions also imply decades and sometimes centuries of associated energy and material flows. Form Follows Energy is about the relationship between energy and the form of our built environment. It examines the optimisation of energy flows in building and urban design and the implications for form and configuration. It speaks to both architectural and engineering audiences and offers for the first time a truly interdisciplinary overview on the subject, explaining the complex relationships between energy and architecture in an easy to follow manner and using simple diagrams to show how energy design strategies can be used to maximize the energy performance of our built environment, while at the same time leading to new aesthetic qualities and radically new forms in architecture and urban design. Case studies are used to illustrate the theory. The books philosophy is based on the guiding principles underlying nearly 30 years work in practice, research and teaching. It is relatively easy to make something simple seem complicated. To make a complex topic seem simple and easily understandable is far more of a challenge and this is the aim of this book.

Abstract

Health and environmental compatibility are key topics in contemporary society. The book shows how the built environment can be aesthetically pleasing, modern and, at the same time, healthy and environmentally friendly. It makes the link between architecture as a design task and a building biology approach to design. Building biology teaches us about the holistic interaction between people and their built environment. It combines building culture with ecology and disciplines such as chemistry, biology, geology, and psychology. Using the building of the Institute of Building Biology + Sustainability (IBN) as a model, building biology criteria and approaches are explained in detail. Numerous additional current projects illustrate how these are implemented in responsible, healthy, and hence sustainable architecture.

Abstract

Green Building Handbook provides a detailed reference for environmentally concerned purchasers of building products, with at-a-glance tables for buyers and specifiers.Environmentally responsible building involves resolving many conflicting issues and requirements. Each stage in the design process from the fundamental decisions about what, where and even whether to build has implications for the environment.Evolving out of the success of Green Building Digest, a publication described by Building Design as well-researched, authoritative and exhaustive, this practical new handbook considers the environmental issues which relate to the production, use and disposal of key building products and materials. It is designed to help specifiers and purchasers gain awareness of the potential environmental impact of their decisions.Chapter by chapter Green Building Handbook looks at a different sector of the trade from flooring to roofing, comparing the environmental effects of commonly available products with less well known green alternatives. A Best Buy section then ranks these products from lowest to highest impact.

Abstract

How is an energy efficient building created? Which are the most important criteria pertaining to urban development or the conception of the floor plan? What are the optimal dimensions appropriate for the building's usage but also ensuring energy efficiency? Which building elements and systems are most suitable? This book systematically explains all relevant criteria and parameters as regards urban development, design and the subsequent construction of a sustainable building. The immense potential for cutting costs by modernising the energy systems in old buildings is also demonstrated.Completed projects are presented according to their usage and are analysed and evaluated in the light of the above criteria. For this purpose extensive plans and technical information are used to illustrate the "energy profile" of each building. This shows the particular importance of planning details carefully. An annotated subject index concludes the volume. Abstract

What makes building materials sustainable? How can we reduce how much "grey energy" is produced in the building process? And how does a Life Cycle Analysis work? These are questions which are becoming increasingly more common in the context of sustainable construction. The DETAIL Green Book Sustainable construction techniques offers a thorough guide to ecological building design and sustainable construction methods, which will be particularly valuable for architects. The authors provide an overview of the most relevant databases and certification standards for building products and illustrate how a Life Cycle Analysis is conducted. They also identify key ways of optimising the planning process in line with ecological criteria, while offering advice for the selection of building materials and elements. Detailed documentation from five buildings constructed in Europe and North America serve to illustrate the associated assessment processes in this book.

Abstract

Ecological refurbishment to Passivhaus standard requires know-how and experience. For this reason, the book has been produced as a design tool which systematically covers existing solutions. Examples relating to building physics, construction and ecology issues are presented in the same successful manner as in the Passivhaus Building Component Catalog also published by IBO/IBN (Institute for Building Biology and Ecology) using standard cross-sections and connection details in four-color scale drawings, as well as numerous tables. They have been organized by type and period of building and can easily be used to derive individual solutions. The book is a must-have reference manual for designers and building owners who want to refurbish properties to a sustainable standard.

Abstract

The “2226” project was completed in 2013 and received an outstanding response from the media. The reason is the clever design of this office building – it manages completely without air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems. “If today we are installing a disproportionate amount of air- and water-based services in buildings in order to create comfortable conditions, we should ask ourselves whether there are not more effective methods”, says Dietmar Eberle. His building demonstrates that low-tech is an alternative to the Passivhaus with its extensive services installations. However, ecological and economical building should also meet architectural criteria – proportion, spatial effect, surface texture and light are essential components affecting the comfort of users. The book documents this seminal model fora newarchitecture with a comprehensive range of photographs by Eduard Hueber, and uses drawings to explain the architectural and energy concepts. Knowledgeable essays by recognized experts on the perfectly balanced construction and function complete this unpretentious and yet sophisticated monograph of a building.
